Physical Education and Sport

Back

Physical Education (PE) and sport are both highly valued at Bickley Primary School. Physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and enhances concentration, but it also has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others.

At Bickley, our PE curriculum is a diverse and inclusive one, always aiming to represent our pupils and meet their needs. We try our best to offer our pupils a broad experience of a range of sports and activities. Our curriculum teaches our children that PE and sport are an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle as well as being a great way to have fun and build strong, long-lasting friendships. Through our rich curriculum, we aim to develop our pupils' competence and confidence in a broad range of physical activities.

All of our children receive at least two hours of high-quality PE lessons every week. Throughout the year, our children take part in games, dance, gymnastics and OAA (Outdoor and Adventurous Activities). Swimming is also taught in Year 4 and 6.

All children have the opportunity to represent their house team (Diamonds, Rubies or Sapphires) in our inter-house competitions. As the children move through the school, they also have the opportunity to represent Bickley Primary School in one of our many successful sports teams. We compete in the Bromley School Games tournaments and other inter-school competitions in a range of sports including football, netball, rounders and athletics. The team’s successes are shared and celebrated in assemblies, on the school sports display and through our social media accounts.

CROSS COUNTRY

Every year, our children really look forward to the fantastic local schools event - Cross Country. This event is for children in years 3-6. This November, our Y5 and Y6 girls and boys did fantastically well! Our Y5 girls came 2nd out of 56 schools that took part and one of our Y6 girls, Anne Sophie Charlesworth became 2nd in her race against 200+ runners - what an achievement! Well done to everyone who took part!

THE PANATHLON CHALLENGE

The Panathlon Challenge is another activity that our children really like taking part in. The Panathlon Challenge, run by the Panathlon charity, brings sporting and leadership opportunities for young people with disabilities and special needs across the UK. The event is a truly inspirational one that brings out the resilience and sportsmanship in our children with SEND. Some sporting activities included this year were: table cricket, boccia, new age kurling and slam dunk.

This year, for the 4th year running, our children returned to school with the 1st place trophy! Our Bickley Panathlon team had a lot of fun and were overjoyed when they found out they came first!

PLAYTIMES AND CLUBS

During lunchtimes the playground is split into activity zones to allow the children to take part in a range of physical activities including table tennis, skipping, football, basketball and activities run by our Year 6 Play Leaders.

Along with the large variety of physical activity within the curriculum, we also offer a range of extra-curricular clubs including netball, football, gymnastics, table tennis, musical theatre and multi-sports. Teachers run some of these clubs whilst others are run by specialist coaches from local sports clubs.

Bickley Primary School has been awarded the Sainsbury’s School Games Gold award for its commitment to offering opportunities for children to be physically active and for its development of competition across the school and into the community.
