Maths

At Bickley Primary School, we believe that mathematics is essential to everyday life and teaches us how to make sense of the world around us. We aim to foster an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of curiosity and enjoyment of the subject.

Mathematical skills are taught following a curriculum based on White Rose Maths. Learning is cumulative and progressive and tailored to meet the needs of every child, with all lessons including an element of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. We aim to support children in remembering what they have been taught previously by revising concepts regularly. Alongside the White Rose Maths resources, we use various aids to support children’s learning and reduce their cognitive load. This may include physical apparatus such as cubes, counters or Numicon, but could also include additional information such as worked examples or number facts. Mathematical vocabulary is taught explicitly in maths lessons and revisited at regular intervals until it is secure.

There are some really useful videos for parents on this website: Maths with Michael | Michael Underwood | White Rose Maths. They demonstrate some of the methods we use for teaching maths in school (which may be different from the methods you were taught when you were at school).
